Promise
On Feburary 4, 2008 at 7:10PM, my mother, Ocie Marie Polk-Bennett died. Since then, life has gone on but the void and memories have not faded into history. There have been many changes in each of her children’s lives. Her youngest daughter, Brenda became a woman. Her oldest daughter, Shaloam, has learned to continue to try to live a better life even with her illness and even gave birth to...

This looks great and it’s one of the most important health issues in our country. Glad to see there is more attention being given to why our cities and economy were designed to make health so hard.
A provocative new 4-hour series soon to air on public television, Designing Healthy Communities, examines the impact of our built environment on key public health indices, including...

Reblogged from jayparkinsonmd:
I bet celebrities and other VIPs (as they’re known in hospitals) get some of the worst healthcare in America. And, when I mean worst, I mean the most.
I did my residency in the West Village in NYC. There seemed to be a new celebrity in the ER every other day. “Oh my god, Lindsay Lohan is in bed 3!” I took care of my fair share of them— I won’t say who. But there...

Maniacal Rage: Please, Let Me Pay →

About 1% of the feedback to my ridiculous Tumblr Error Page post has been that I’m a stupid jackass for complaining about a free service (the other 99% is likes and agreeing reblogs). But here’s the thing, folks: I’ve been complaining for years that Tumblr is free. I don’t want it to be free. I

Lost, again.
Over the weekend, well, Friday night. I had another hard drive failure and lost ALL of my photos and software backups and fonts and movies. It was a Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM OEM (P-ATA) drive. Great the drive is till in warranty, bad thing is that the data on the drive is (possibly) gone. It does however make some clicking, whirling noise when power to the firewire enclosure is turned on.

What we believe in.
Frank throws up another must read fastball but this time he really hits it past the wall. This is one of those pieces that makes me want to close up this little shop and redirect the domain to it. To quote any single part of it would be a disservice to you the reader but also, more importantly, the work. I can’t believe it is this early in the year and I may...
Neven Mrgan's tumbl: "Nigger" →

As a chronic sufferer of white guilt, I was hesitant to say anything about this whole dumb idea of replacing the word “nigger” with “slave” in a goofy new edition of Huckleberry Finn. But I can live with reblogging Albert’s smart little piece about it:
To edit the word from our literature we…

Helping for helping's sake
Last night, I was at my favorite diner and I see a neighbor stumble in and sit down at the counter. He was obviously drunk and not in good shape. A waitress approaches him and a quick exchange ensues. The waitress turns and asks if anyone has a cellphone that he could use. No one offered. After a few seconds he leaves. I then ask the waitress what he needed. She said his brother had died and he...

More than a decade ago, I was living in northern Mexico for a period of two years. I met and conversed with wonderful people throughout the states of Coahuila, Durango, and Zacatecas. I spoke fairly fluent Spanish at the time. And I was about as poor financially as I’d ever been.

End of Summer 2010
How I spent a couple moments this summer
As another summer closes, I am reflecting on what I have accomplished and what I have not. And all I can say is this: I am a fucking slacker! So many grandiose dreams and aspirations and only thing I know I have done for sure is that I have put on weight. UGH!
Highlights: Made some new friends, organized some paperwork, gave a thrown-together talk on...
Ryan Freitas: 35 Lessons in 35 Years →
My father always told me that the day we stop learning is the day we die. I wrote this as a sort of preparation for my 35th birthday last week. Some of these are poignant, others are simply trite; I attribute the latter to my growing sense of sentimentality as I age. That, and I need an editor.
…
Yup… I agree with nearly all of these lessons
